An AI that calls Comcast and waits on hold, so you can ask for a lower bill

Asking your cable or internet provider for a lower bill is a call most people know they should make and keep putting off, because of the menus and the wait. Text Book. An AI assistant calls Comcast customer service, works through the menu to billing or the department you name, and waits on hold. When a real person answers, your phone rings and you're put through to ask about your rate yourself.

Example text“Call Comcast, go to billing, wait on hold, and call me when a person answers. I want to ask about lowering my internet bill.”

What the call can sound like

An illustration. Real calls vary with the business.

  1. Phone menu“…for billing and payments, press 2.”
  2. BookChooses the billing option and stays on the line.
  3. Recording“Your call will be answered in the order it was received.”
  4. BookKeeps holding. Music and recordings don't count as a person.
  5. Agent“Thank you for holding. How can I help?”
  6. Book“One moment please.” Your phone rings. Press any key and you're talking to them.

How it works

  1. 1

    Text what you want

Say you want Comcast's billing or customer service, and that you want a call when a person answers.

  2. 2

    The assistant waits

It gets through the menu and sits on hold, so you don't spend your evening on the phone.

  3. 3

    You make the ask

Your phone rings when a person comes on. Press a key, then ask about your plan and rate. The assistant drops off.

What to put in your text

  • That the call is to Comcast (or Xfinity) and which department you want, such as billing or cancellations
  • That you want to be rung when a person answers
  • Your service address or phone number on the account, in case you want it for yourself while you wait. Book doesn't need your login, and never gives out a Social Security or card number.

Good to know

  • Book can't promise a lower bill. What a provider offers depends on your account, your plan and the day you call. Book gets you to a person without the wait; the conversation is yours.
  • The assistant doesn't accept offers or agree to price changes for you. It only brings you in, or if you ask it to, asks a question and texts you the answer.
  • Before the call, it helps to have your latest bill open, know what you pay now, and know the plan you'd be happy with.
  • Comcast's phone number and menu can change. Book shows you the number it found before it calls. Check it, and reply YES only if it's the line you want.
  • Book calls regular US and Canadian business phone numbers. A call ends after about an hour as a safety limit.

Questions

Can the AI negotiate my bill for me?

No. It doesn't haggle or accept offers on your behalf. It waits on hold and puts you through to a person, and you talk to them. If you'd like, it can ask a simple question first, such as what plans are available, and text you the answer.

Will Comcast know I'm using Book?

The assistant says it's an AI assistant if anyone asks. Once a person has joined you on the call, you're the one speaking.

What if nobody answers or the line drops?

Book texts you what happened and the number to try, and you can ask it to try again.
