An AI that calls customer service and waits on hold for you

Airlines, cable companies, banks and insurers all have the same routine: a phone menu, a recording about how important your call is, and a hold that can run for the better part of an hour. Text Book who to call. An AI assistant dials in, works through the menu, waits on the line, and the moment a real person answers, your phone rings and you are put through. You talk to the person. You skip the waiting.

Example text“Call Delta customer service about my canceled flight, wait on hold, and call me when a person answers.”

What the call can sound like

An illustration. Real calls vary with the business.

  1. Phone menu“For billing, press 2. For technical support, press 3…”
  2. BookPresses the key for the department you asked for.
  3. Recording“Your estimated wait time is 38 minutes.”
  4. BookStays on the line. Hold music doesn't count as a person, so it keeps waiting.
  5. Agent“Thanks for holding, this is Dana. How can I help?”
  6. Book“One moment please.” Your phone rings. You press any key and you're talking to Dana.

How it works

  1. 1

Text the company and ask for a call back

Name the company and, if you know it, the department. Say you want a call when a person answers.

  2. 2

    The assistant does the waiting

It listens to the menu, presses keys or says a short answer when asked, and holds for as long as the line stays up.

  3. 3

    Your phone rings

When a live person is on the line, Book rings you. Press any key and you're connected. The assistant then drops off the call.

What to put in your text

  • The company, and the department or reason, if you know it (billing, cancellations, claims, a flight change)
  • That you want to be called when a person answers
  • Anything that helps it reach the right queue, such as “press 1 for existing customers”
  • Whether you'd rather it make a simple request itself, such as asking their hours or a status, instead of ringing you

Good to know

  • Recordings, hold music, queue announcements and voicemail don't count as a person. Book only brings you in when someone is talking to it.
  • Pressing a key on your phone is required to connect, so a voicemail box on your phone is never put through to the company.
  • You can text “call me” at any point to be put through right away, or “call me when someone picks up” if the call is already on hold.
  • If you don't answer, the assistant tells the company you'll call back, and Book texts you the number to try again.
  • Banks, airlines and carriers will often ask for your account details, date of birth or a PIN. That's the best reason to take the call yourself when the person comes on.
  • Book calls regular US and Canadian business phone numbers. As a safety limit, a call ends after about an hour.

Questions

Can the AI handle the whole call for me?

For simple requests, yes: it can ask a question or make a request and text you what the company said. For anything that needs your identity, a PIN or a decision, ask it to ring you when a person answers and talk to them yourself.

Does it work with voice menus that ask me to say something?

Yes. When a menu asks the caller to say a few words, the assistant answers out loud with the short phrase that matches your request, such as “billing” or “representative”.

What if the company hangs up before a person answers?

Book tells you by text, and you can ask it to try again.

Do I need to stay by my phone?

Keep it on and reachable. Book rings you as soon as a person answers, and they can't be kept waiting for long.

Is Book free?

Yes, Book is free to use. Standard message and data rates from your mobile carrier may apply to texts.
