What the call can sound like
An illustration. Real calls vary with the business.
- Gym“Iron Works Fitness, this is Chris.”
- Agent“Hi, I'm calling for Taylor Brooks, who'd like to cancel their membership.”
- Gym“I need the name on the account. We also need 30 days' notice.”
- AgentGives the name from your text. “Understood. Could you cancel it and email Taylor a confirmation?”
- Gym“Done. The last billing date will be December 1st, and you'll get an email.”
- AgentThanks them and hangs up. You get a text with the date and what to look for in your email.
How it works
- 1
Text the gym and the membership details
The gym and its location, the name on the account, and anything that helps find it, like a member number.
- 2
Check the request
Book repeats what it will ask for. You reply YES, and it only calls after that.
- 3
Get what the gym said
The assistant asks to cancel and reports back by text: whether it's cancelled, the last billing date, any fee, and any step the gym says it needs.
What to put in your text
- The gym name and the city or street
- The name the membership is under, plus a phone number, email or member number on the account
- That you want to cancel (not freeze or downgrade), and from what date if it matters
- A request for the confirmation by email or a confirmation number
- Whether you'd rather talk to them yourself once a person answers
Good to know
- The terms are in your contract. Some gyms require 30 days' notice, a fee, or that you cancel in person, by mail or in your account. The assistant asks the gym exactly what's needed and texts you. Book doesn't give legal advice.
- The assistant doesn't agree to pay fees, give out card numbers or accept offers on your behalf. If the gym offers a discount to stay or says there's a fee, it passes that along and you decide.
- If the gym says it can only cancel for the account holder in person or in writing, you'll get that in a text so you can do the one step that's left.
- To argue the case yourself, ask Book to ring you when a person answers and it will put you through.
- Book calls regular US and Canadian business phone numbers.
Questions
Can an AI bot cancel a gym membership over the phone?
It can ask the gym to cancel, give the account details you supplied and report exactly what they said. Whether the gym completes the cancellation over the phone depends on the gym. Some insist on something in person or in writing, and the assistant tells you which.
What if the gym tries to keep me with an offer?
The assistant doesn't take offers on your behalf. It asks the gym to confirm the cancellation, passes the offer on in a text and leaves the choice to you.
What if the gym wants to talk to me?
Say in your text that you want a call when a person answers. Book waits on the line and rings you, and you can handle that part yourself.
Does it work for other memberships or subscriptions?
It can call any business with a regular US or Canadian phone number, so yes for many memberships. Say who to call and what you want.
Is Book free?
Yes, Book is free to use. Standard message and data rates from your mobile carrier may apply to texts.
