What the call can sound like
An illustration. Real calls vary with the business.
- Phone menu“To schedule an appointment, press 2…”
- BookPresses the option for appointments and holds.
- Recording“Your call is important to us…”
- BookKeeps waiting for a person.
- Agent“DMV appointments, how can I help?”
- Book“I'm calling for Pat Kim to book an appointment to renew a driver's license, weekday mornings.” It texts you the slot afterward.
How it works
- 1
Text the office and the service
Which DMV office or city, what you need to do (renew, register, REAL ID, a test) and when you're free.
- 2
The assistant calls and waits
It works through the menu and holds for a person.
- 3
Get the booked time
It asks for an appointment in your times and texts you the date and time, or the openings it was offered.
What to put in your text
- The DMV office or the city, and the state
- What you need to do there: renew a license, register a vehicle, apply for a REAL ID, or a driving test
- The days and times you're free, and how flexible you are
- The name the appointment should be under
Good to know
- Not every DMV books by phone. Many send people to a website or an online scheduler. If the office doesn't book by phone, Book tells you what it was told.
- Documents and fees are between you and the DMV. If the office needs a license number or other ID details that Book doesn't have, it asks whether they're needed and texts you.
- Book doesn't pay fees and never gives out a Social Security number or card number on a call.
- Book shows you the phone number it found before calling. Check it's the right office and reply YES.
- Book calls regular US and Canadian business phone numbers. A call ends after about an hour as a safety limit.
