An AI bot that calls a Japanese restaurant and books your table

Sushi counters, izakayas and small family-run Japanese places often take reservations only by phone, and sometimes the person who answers is more comfortable in Japanese. Text Book the restaurant, the party and the time. An AI assistant phones the restaurant, in English by default or in Japanese if you ask, books the table and texts you the confirmation.

Example text“Table for 4 at Sushi Hana in Seattle, Friday at 7pm, under Kim. Please make the call in Japanese.”

What the call can sound like

An illustration. Real calls vary with the business.

  1. Restaurant“Sushi Hana, can I help you?”
  2. AgentSpeaks in the language you chose, or in English: “I'd like to book a table for four on Friday at seven, under Kim.”
  3. Restaurant“Seven is full. We have 6:30 or 8:30.”
  4. Agent“Could you give me the earlier time, 6:30, for Kim?” (if you said that works; otherwise it texts you the options)
  5. Restaurant“Yes, that's booked.”
  6. BookYou get a text with the day, time, party size and the name.

How it works

  1. 1

Text the restaurant, party and time

The name, the city, how many, the day and time and the name for the booking. Add “call in Japanese” if you want that.

  2. 2

    Check the place with Book

It looks up the restaurant and shows you the address and number. You reply YES.

  3. 3

It calls and you get the confirmation

The assistant books the table and texts you in your own language.

What to put in your text

  • The restaurant's name and the city or street, so the right location is called
  • Party size, date and time, and how flexible you are
  • The name the table should be under
  • The language for the call, if you'd like Japanese (otherwise English)
  • Allergies or dietary needs, so the restaurant knows in advance

Good to know

  • Book only calls US and Canadian phone numbers today. It can't book a restaurant in Japan.
  • The assistant can speak Japanese on the call, and it switches to the other person's language if they answer in a different one. Quality is best in common languages.
  • Your text and the confirmation arrive in whichever language you set for texts. They can differ from the call's language.
  • If the restaurant wants a card or deposit to hold the table, Book doesn't give card numbers. It asks how to hold it and texts you.
  • If your time is full, it doesn't choose another unless you said that's fine. It texts you the choices.
